This Week in 1986- The live mascot for the Toronto Blue Jays flew south for the winter, and decided to stay in St. Louis thereafter.
It’s been increasingly difficult to write my thoughts in a coherent fashion over the years. With my head over and under analyzing every random thing, including how to write this blog to introduce myself, it’s a wonder I don’t spend a ridiculous amount of money on Tylenol. (I like to insert my “comments” in parentheses, as you can tell)
Well, I can start it this way, I guess. (Look at that, already second-guessing myself) My name is Jake Schwartz (@jakeschwartz1), and I started working here at Old Hat Creative roughly 3 weeks ago. (Who are you kidding? You can’t call this “work”!) After 4 years as an undergraduate at the University of Arizona (Wildcats baby, not ASU…Kevin!), I moved home to Los Angeles for a year and volunteered with UCLA and LMU athletics. When I was lucky enough to be offered an opportunity with Old Hat, ironically, I didn’t think twice about it. (get it? Cause I over think things?)
My parents, over the last year, had heard about my job applications to various cities around the country, but I don’t think they expected to hear Norman, Oklahoma, as my destination. Every time my parents or I tell someone that I moved from LA to Norman, everyone responds with a resounding “What’s in Norman?”
As I’ve learned in my first few weeks here, there is a lot in Norman. The passion for the Oklahoma Sooners is legendary, and the town essentially shuts down during Saturdays in the fall, with all the action focused on tailgating and the football game. My favorite part of this town is the lifestyle. Coming from the hustle bustle of Los Angeles (with all the traffic, smog, and plastic surgery), it’s refreshing to live in a town so laid back just going about its business. My apartment (and the office) is right next to an active railroad, and I find the horns and sounds of the trains rolling through very soothing. (my apartment shakes a little also!)
When you get an opportunity to work for Zac Logsdon and Old Hat Creative, you take it, no matter where it is (even Antarctica? Yeah, even Antarctica). I’m so glad and fortunate that it’s in Norman (and that I didn’t over think it).
