This Week In Sports History

This Week in 1995- Gary Payton was the first NBA player to wear a pair of rubber gloves during a game.

This weekend was why I am a sports fan. This weekend was why I work in sports.  The weekend started simple enough.  Texas A&M baseball had a home series against San Diego State.  While I was in school I rarely missed a home baseball game.  Now I follow as many as I can via a radio app on my smart phone.  Saturday afternoon around the fourth inning I realized Ross Stripling had a no hitter going.  There are few things in baseball that I enjoy more than watching a pitcher once he realizes he is working on a no-no.  He lost the perfect game in the third but managed to complete the no hitter.  He faced the minimum, as his one walk was caught stealing. What a game!

A couple months ago I wrote a blog titled “Content is King”

Unique and original content is what will get traffic on your site, but what about getting people on your Facebook page?  Content is still king!  You can have 1,000,000 people that “Like” your page but if you do not engage those users then it is pointless.

Today is Friday the 13th, my favorite day on the calendar when it happens to pop up.  Thirteen has been my lucky number since I was ten or somewhere close to that.  It was never a number I would think to choose but when a teammates mother convinced me to change jerseys with her son (because she did not want him to have to wear 13) it just stuck.  I also realized that of all the numbers you have as an option in youth sports, thirteen always ended up being available.  It has been my lucky number ever since.  If you ever meet me in person you will probably end up seeing the silver chain I wear around my neck with a number thirteen hanging on it.  I have only taken this necklace off for three occasions in the last fifteen years.  At this point it is not a superstition but more of a habit and the fact that I feel weird with out it on.

I have recently been helping a friend prepare for an interview as he attempts to change his career path.  On top of that we are looking to bring on a couple new staff members at Old Hat and I have been participating in those interviews.

In a short amount of time I have gone from the interviewer to helping an interviewee and it got me thinking about the interviews I have done in my short career.  It can be an uncomfortable position for both parties involved.  Nerves always play a role on both sides.

Last week both Robert and Kris had great blogs about inspiration in their lives.  The same week my mother asked me to list out some of my favorite quotes, which got me thinking. I am going to try to talk about what quotes that inspire me and why.  There are two quotes that have stuck out in my mind in the last year or so.  One is a bit nerdy and the other came from a man who has mentored hundreds of sports professionals in the industry.

“Do, or do not.  There is no try.”

Teams spend massive amounts of money to portray their message to the world.  With over 50% of the U.S.

Working with websites, more specifically working with sports websites, there is always a debate over what makes a good website.  What attracts visitors?  How can I get people to comeback to my site?

CONTENT!!!

Content is king.  Take a moment to think about the websites you visit on a regular basis.  What gets you to come back?  My guess it is the content.  Almost every day I go to http://www.partnershipactivation.com/http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Daily.aspxhttp://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/, and http://soccernet.espn.go.com/?cc=5901.

We have been busy with our Old Hat 15 Days of Christmas going on right now on Twitter. Make sure you check out all the action with the #OH15Days hashtag. Today, Dustin (@dustinschmidt) is giving some tips on photography.

Today is Veteran's Day, the annual U.S. holiday honoring military veterans and the end of World War I, also celebrated as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world. We want to recognize and thank these courageous men and women who willingly serve to defend the freedoms and rights of others.

When I was a child my father always made me call my grandfather on Veteran’s day.  I had no idea why I did that every year but I did as I was told.  My father stopped making me call my grandfather when I was in high school.  I was becoming an adult and decisions like that were left up to me.  I probably let the practice slip away for a couple years but since the time I was seventeen I have call my grandfather every year on this day.

When I started at Old hat Creative I knew the task of blogging on a regular basis was required.  I am not the most talkative person and the thought of having to come up with something that would interest visitors to oldhatcreative.com was frightening.  My answer was to come up with my three best ideas and save them for when I had nothing else of relevance.

Well, today I am using the first… Hermione.
